Our Mission
To support and represent Virginia local governments, through open collaboration, in addressing the unique challenges that come with rapid community growth and expansion. We seek to promote good governance by:
- Identifying issues facing high growth localities by working with local officials and administrators
- Developing both legislative and regulatory strategies to address these issues, through close collaboration with local government officials and policymakers
- Advocating for practical solutions to high growth issues facing member communities
Who We Are
The Virginia Coalition of High Growth Communities is an organization comprised of rapidly growing counties, cities, and towns. Our member localities and municipalities represent regions across the commonwealth. We recognize growth will take many forms, so membership in the coalition is not dependent on a minimum population, but rather the expressed needs of the locality. We offer membership to any county, city, or town with interest in addressing the challenges of growth they may be experiencing or anticipating.
We are a bipartisan collective of local government administrators, managers, board members, and lobbyists who seek to deliver on the practical needs of our member jurisdictions.
Our History
Founded in 1998, the coalition began in Fredericksburg, Virginia at a meeting of local government officials from communities experiencing high rates of growth. It was here this group recognized the need to partner alongside fellow counties, cities, and towns facing similar problems. They made the decision to organize for the purpose of sharing their mutual experiences, developing strategies to address rapid development, and collectively communicating to policymakers the effects state law and regulation have on their localities.
Today, more than 25 years later, that same purpose holds true. As more regions in the commonwealth begin to experience rates of growth never seen before, we continue to pursue good governance through practical policy change.
